BEZZINA HOUSE

CANCER CARE LODGE
INFORMATION FOR GUESTS

Lutate therapy delivers precise radiation to tumour cells while minimising effects on healthy tissue.

WHAT IS BEZZINA HOUSE?

Bezzina House was built through the generous support of the community following a public appeal by The St. George Hospital & Community Health Service. It is a purpose built lodge, within easy walking distance of The St. George Hospital. It provides comfortable, low cost, home-away-from-home accommodation for cancer patients and their immediate carer undergoing treatment at the St. George Hospital.

The Lodge is located on a busy main road opposite the hospital and close to emergency service bases and the medical retrieval helipad. Management has no control over noise levels in the area.

FACILITIES/ROOMS

The Lodge has 15 self-contained units, some with wheelchair access. There are three wings, two on the ground floor and on one the upper level. Each unit is equipped with two single beds or a double bed, a sofa bed, built-in wardrobe and fully equipped kitchen. Each unit has the convenience and privacy of an ensuite bathroom.

WHAT TO BRING?

While staying at the Lodge you will need to bring your own food, toiletries and laundry powder. Linen and towels will be provided.

Guests are responsible for making their own beds and keeping the units neat, clean and tidy during their stay. Bed linen and towels are provided and a cleaning service is provided upon checkout for the units and for heavy routine cleaning of commercial areas.

PLEASE NOTE: Smoking is not permitted in the units or grounds of Bezzina House

Bezzina House has been designed around a sunny courtyard and garden area. BBQ facilities are available.

The laundry is adjacent to the community room at the foot of the courtyard and is equipped with washing machines, clothes dryers and a clothes line.

Some patients with functional (hormonally active) neuroendocrine tumours have a small (<1%) risk of stimulating a carcinoid crisis during lutate therapy. This is a serious condition involving the release of highly active hormones and proteins from your tumour, leading to complications such as unstable blood pressure or difficulty breathing. This is treated with short-acting somatostatin analogues and is very manageable once correctly identified.
